10 Songs For The Loosely Motivated Runner

Today is just an ordinary Monday, so i decided that looking forward to a better day is a good idea in this particular instance. Tomorrow is the Regional Track Meet. You know, it’s the one where the top 3 people/relay teams in each even qualify for the State Meet. Maybe you don’t know, but that’s the general idea.

I don’t know if anybody else feels the same way I do, but clearly one of the best part about being a competitive athlete is warming up for the big shebang. You’ve got on that intense jacket that just screams Nike model. You’re ready for war, and no machine gun’s going to take you down. You’ve got your Beats headphones on the highest volume your ears can withstand. Those song feel like they’re playing out for the entire world to hear. You almost have to remind yourself not to sing out loud, although you couldn’t if you wanted to because you’re so out of breath anyway. And not even because you’re out of shape. No. Your warm up is just that intense. It’s called a quality warmup, something those amateur runners around you wouldn’t know anything about. (Well, that’s what you tell yourself anyway).

You’re in the middle of the field. Girls walk by with individual thighs about the size of both of yours combined, and nothing jiggles. They’re rocks man. The kinds of rocks that win the 200m by nearly 30m or so. Or, the kind of rocks that jump your triple jump P.R. effortlessly. But you can’t worry about that now, or you’ve lost the race before you’ve even set up your starting blocks. You look away in slight disgust. You notice the guys surrounding you in muscle shirts. They’re bouncing around doing their little A-skips and buttkicks. They’re precise. That one on the left is maybe a little bit attractive, but right now he’s nothing but a punk. The guys on your team will without a doubt CRUSH HIM, when they hit the track. Maybe you look like a complete idiot doing your high knees next to these future Olympians, or so they seem. Maybe you’ll make your knees go extra high, practically kneeing yourself in the teeth, just so you can feel on their level. Or maybe, you won’t put enough effort into them in order to save energy for the legit stuff, because we all know nothing really counts until the gun goes off. Whatever it is, the music is doing this crazy thing to your brain. It puts you in the zone. Once you’re there, you’re ready to win, or at least give it your best shot. This is the playlist I’ve organized for tomorrows warm up. 10 Songs guaranteed to bring out your inner Usain Bolt, attitude and all.

  1. International – Chali 2na
  2. Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes
  3. Love Addict – Family Force 5
  4. Strange Clouds (feat. Lil Wayne) – B.o.B.
  5. Radioactive – Imagine Dragons (skip the first 27 seconds, for best results)
  6. Til I Collapse – Eminem
  7. Bangarang (feat. Sirah) – Skrillex
  8. I Told You So – Karmin
  9. Pretty Girls (REMIX) (feat. Rascal Blend) – Wale
  10. Let’s Get It Started – Black Eyed Peas

It’s really amazing what pump-up music can do to the brain, because as soon as I’m in the blocks, all I can think is, “Why on earth am I doing this to myself?” but then it’s too late because the gun is just like… BOOM!
